Healing brews and herbal infusions
In Ayurveda, drinking warm water and herbal infusions is one of the most accessible daily practices. What you drink, when you drink it, and at what temperature directly affects your agni, your doshas, and your overall vitality. Tea is not just a beverage — it is liquid medicine.
Tridoshic (balances all three)
The universal Ayurvedic digestive tea. Equal parts cumin, coriander, and fennel seeds steeped in hot water create a gentle, tridoshic brew that kindles agni without aggravating Pitta, reduces bloating, supports nutrient absorption, and gently detoxifies the lymphatic system. Drink throughout the day, especially between meals.
Cumin, Coriander, Fennel
Digestion, gentle detox, daily sipping
Combine 1/2 tsp each of whole seeds. Steep in 2 cups hot water for 5-10 minutes. Strain and sip warm.
Regulates samana vayu, the prana governing digestive movement and assimilation.
Gently kindles digestive tejas (agni) without creating excess heat.
Supports ojas by optimizing nutrient extraction from food.
Vata ↓ Pitta ↓ (use lighter milk for Kapha)
The ancient golden elixir — turmeric simmered in warm milk with black pepper (for absorption), ghee, and a touch of sweetener. This nourishing nightcap reduces inflammation, builds ojas, soothes the nervous system, and promotes deep sleep. A cup before bed is one of Ayurveda's simplest and most powerful rituals.
Turmeric, Black Pepper, Ghee, Warm Milk, Cinnamon
Inflammation, sleep, immunity, joint health
Warm 1 cup milk with 1/2 tsp turmeric, pinch black pepper, 1/2 tsp ghee, cinnamon stick. Simmer 5 min. Sweeten with honey (after cooling below 40C) or jaggery.
Warms and circulates stagnant prana, especially beneficial in evening.
Turmeric and spices activate gentle tejas — anti-inflammatory intelligence.
A premier ojas-building drink — the combination of milk, ghee, and turmeric deeply nourishes vital essence.
Vata ↓ Kapha ↓ (mildly warming, generally safe for Pitta)
The liquid essence of the sacred plant. Tulsi tea elevates sattva, clears the respiratory passages, sharpens the mind, and gently reduces stress. It is one of the most commonly consumed teas in India — not for flavor alone, but as a daily practice of devotion and health. Drink freely throughout the day.
Holy Basil leaves (fresh or dried)
Respiratory health, stress relief, immunity, spiritual practice
Steep 5-6 fresh leaves or 1 tsp dried tulsi in hot water for 5-7 minutes. Add honey or lemon if desired.
Opens respiratory channels, increasing prana absorption with every sip.
Elevates sattvic tejas — mental clarity with spiritual luminosity.
Protects ojas through adaptogenic stress buffering and immune support.
Vata ↓ Kapha ↓ (may aggravate Pitta if too spicy)
India's gift to the world. Authentic masala chai is a medicinal preparation — ginger ignites agni, cardamom detoxifies caffeine, cinnamon regulates blood sugar, clove is antiseptic, and black pepper enhances bioavailability. Properly made chai is not just a beverage but a trikatu-powered digestive medicine disguised as comfort.
Black Tea, Ginger, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Clove, Black Pepper, Milk
Digestion, energy, warmth, Vata/Kapha balance
Crush whole spices. Boil in water with grated ginger. Add black tea, simmer 2 min. Add milk, bring to boil. Strain. Sweeten to taste.
Strongly activates prana vayu — warming, stimulating, and channel-opening.
Ignites digestive tejas (agni) — the go-to tea for sluggish metabolism.
Protects ojas by burning ama (toxins) before they can degrade vital reserves.
Vata ↓↓ (strongly calming to Vata)
A deeply grounding nighttime elixir for Vata types and anyone dealing with stress, anxiety, or insomnia. Ashwagandha rebuilds depleted nervous tissue, nutmeg promotes sleep, and warm milk with ghee carries the herbs deep into the tissues. This is rasayana (rejuvenation) in a cup.
Ashwagandha, Warm Milk, Nutmeg, Ghee, Cardamom
Insomnia, anxiety, stress recovery, nervous system nourishment
Warm 1 cup milk with 1/2 tsp ashwagandha powder, pinch nutmeg, 1/2 tsp ghee, crushed cardamom. Simmer gently for 3-5 minutes.
Calms and grounds prana vayu, preparing the nervous system for deep rest.
Gently supports tejas without stimulation — nourishing rather than activating.
One of the most ojas-building beverages — warm milk + ashwagandha deeply replenishes vitality.
Kapha ↓↓ Vata ↓ (use less ginger for Pitta)
The simplest and most powerful morning tonic. Fresh ginger root simmered in water, then finished with lemon and honey (added once cooled below 40C, as Ayurveda teaches that heated honey becomes toxic). This combination ignites digestive fire, clears morning ama from the tongue and GI tract, and alkalizes the system.
Fresh Ginger, Lemon, Raw Honey
Morning detox, digestion, immunity, weight management
Slice 1-inch fresh ginger. Simmer in 1.5 cups water for 10 min. Cool slightly, add juice of 1/2 lemon and 1 tsp raw honey.
Clears blocked prana channels (srotas) throughout the body.
Supports metabolic tejas by clearing the toxins that obstruct it.
Protects ojas long-term by systematically removing the ama that degrades it.
Pitta ↓ Vata ↓ (cooling and calming)
The tea of scholars, meditators, and seekers. Brahmi cools an overheated mind, sharpens memory and concentration, and calms mental restlessness without causing drowsiness. It is one of the rare herbs that is both calming and cognition-enhancing. Ideal before study, meditation, or creative work.
Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) leaves or powder
Focus, memory, meditation, mental clarity, anxiety
Steep 1 tsp dried brahmi or 1/2 tsp powder in hot water for 5-8 minutes. Can blend with gotu kola for enhanced effect.
Calms excess prana in the mind — settles mental restlessness and scattered energy.
Directly feeds tejas — enhances memory, focus, and discriminative intelligence.
Supports ojas through deep nervous system nourishment.
Vata ↓ Pitta ↓ (avoid with hypertension or Kapha excess)
Naturally sweet without sugar, licorice root is one of Ayurveda's most versatile herbs. As a tea, it soothes sore throats, heals stomach ulcers, nourishes the adrenals, and harmonizes other herbs in a formula. Its natural sweetness makes it an excellent base for blending with more bitter or pungent herbs.
Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
Sore throat, adrenal fatigue, stomach lining, voice
Simmer 1 tsp chopped root in 2 cups water for 10-15 minutes. Strain and enjoy. Naturally sweet.
Soothes and moistens dry prana channels, especially in the respiratory tract.
Cools excess tejas, providing sweet relief to overworked mental fire.
Excellent ojas-supportive herb — its sweet, nourishing quality replenishes depleted reserves.
A quick guide to choosing teas that balance your constitution.
Warm, sweet, grounding, mildly spiced
Ashwagandha Moon Milk, Masala Chai, Licorice, Ginger-Lemon
Excess caffeine, cold/iced drinks, overly bitter herbs
Cooling, sweet, mildly bitter, soothing
Brahmi, CCF, Mint, Rose, Licorice, Fennel
Excess ginger, clove, cinnamon; overly spicy chai
Warming, stimulating, light, pungent, bitter
Ginger-Lemon-Honey, Tulsi, Masala Chai, Trikatu Tea
Excess milk, sweeteners, cold drinks, heavy preparations
Always drink warm or hot — never iced. Cold drinks suppress agni and create ama. Room temperature water is acceptable in summer for Pitta types.
Sip warm water first thing in the morning. Drink digestive teas before or after meals (not during). Avoid heavy teas after sunset except calming ones like moon milk.
Never heat honey above 40C (104F). Ayurveda teaches that heated honey becomes a subtle toxin (ama). Always let tea cool before adding honey.
Drink mindfully, with attention. Your state of mind at the time of consumption affects how the body processes the medicine. Tea is a meditation.
